7th June 1935 - 21st August 2025
Mike entered Abingdon in 1946. He loved his schooldays, and had the greatest affection and respect for Sir James Cobban, who was Headmaster for most of Mike's time at the School.
Mike took a very active part in the life of the School, eventually becoming Head of School. He excelled at sport, particularly rugby and cricket, and also at hockey and athletics. He participated in dramatics, played a brass wind instrument, and was an enthusiastic cadet, rising to be CSM. He somehow found time to obtain the academic qualifications required to join the RAF straight from School as an Officer Cadet.
Mike spent the greatest part of his working life in the RAF, seeing active service as a very young RAF Regiment officer in Cyprus and Jordan. He spent a brief time out of the Service gaining his teaching qualification at Culham College and teaching for a while in a secondary modern school then rejoined the RAF in the Admin Branch, eventually attaining the rank of Squadron Leader.
He left the RAF at the age of 50 but carried on working until he was in his 70s, with his roles including owning and running a sub-Post Office, teaching in a C of E junior school on the Isle of Wight and being Quartermaster of the Wycliffe College CCF.
Mike had 3 sons, Mark and Paul with his first wife Mary, and James with his second wife Anne who survives him.
