John grew up in Abingdon with sisters Anne and Carolyn. During his time at Abingdon School he forged enduring friendships and a love for the outdoors, notably during trips to the Isle of Skye with the Skye Group.
John’s academic prowess secured him a scholarship to Keble College Oxford where He earned a degree in Physiology; this was followed by an MSc from Glasgow University, where he met his future wife Jean. John completed his clinical practice at the Old Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. He married Jean in April 1971, and they moved to Northampton where John began his GP training, eventually becoming a Senior Partner at the Leicester Terrace Practice. He was known as a dedicated, caring family doctor of the "old school," making visits to his patients at home and when on call in the evenings.
Beyond his professional life, John was a man of diverse interests. He and Jean shared passions for gardening, opera, and travel. John would often join with OA Chris Ford to attend opera performances as well as meeting up with OA Bruce Mackay at medical conferences in far flung locations around the world. He enjoyed woodturning, conversation, good wines, and had a house full of books, reflecting his continuous pursuit of knowledge, undertaking Open University degree modules in Roman History.
John was a cherished friend, and dedicated family doctor. He passed away on 12th November 2025 aged 79, leaving a legacy of warmth, intellect, and quiet humour.
He is survived by his wife Jean, children Thomas and Anna, granddaughter Rosie, and sisters Anne and Carolyn.
